For the past three years, World Portuguese Language Day has been celebrated on 5 May. In the course of this special day, the Portuguese cultural institute Instituto Camões called on all Portuguese-speaking students abroad to participate in the short story competition "Contos 2022". More than 100 young writers took part. The Portuguese-speaking pupils of the ESM also answered the call, under the guidance of their teacher Professora Ana Coelho. At the beginning of the year, the authors of the fifth grade of the Primary School submitted their stories on the given theme "Oceans".
The European School Munich is now pleased to congratulate its pupil Maria Ana Lampreia Kink, who won the prize in her category with her story. On 5 May, the student received her prize in Lisbon.
In her story, Maria Ana gives personality to five plastic waste objects and illustrates their miserable existence in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But the hopelessness comes to an end with new collection and recycling technology and a new hopeful cycle begins.
The award ceremony was integrated into the celebrations for World Portuguese Language Day. Representatives from all aspects of Lusophone literature and language development attended the event, along with the jurors and government officials. The Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa was also invited, because literature is a matter of utmost importance in the poet nation of Portugal. Finally, Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho presented the ESM student with the prize: a book voucher worth 200€ and the publication of her short story in a book together with the works of the other prize winners.
