Pupils from the European School Munich successfully took part in Germany's best-known science school competition, Jugend forscht (Youth researches). Due to the ongoing pandemic, the regional competitions took place as online events this year. All participants answered the jury's questions about their submitted work in a video conference.

This year's winners were Lidia W. and Lisa Fleitmann (S3) with the topic: "Champagne cooler as a loudspeaker?". The two ESM pupils investigated the development of loudness in different bodies and thus secured first prize and the regional victory in the subject area of technology. They thus qualified for the national competition. Furthermore, both received the special prize for "Hearing, Noise and Acoustics". "Jugend forscht was a very interesting experience," say the winners: "We can only recommend everyone to take part in the Jufo competition."

The second prize in the technical field and the special "Thinking Safety" prize was held by Filip Bakstein (S4) with his "Human Recognizer". His design is intended to help recognise people buried under rubble. "I was a little nervous before I had the talk with the jury," the student says: "In the end, it turned out that I had nothing to fear at all. The jury was nice and didn't want to cross-examine me either." He would also like to take part again next year.

Without an award, but with a positive response from the jury, Barbora P. and Felicia Klaes (S5) took part. They investigated the dehydration of Ottobrunn's soils and are looking forward to another chance next year.

Interested young researchers can still register for Jugend forscht this school year. Pupils who want to take part should contact the Jufo team at the secondary school: Mr Feiler, Dr Ceschi or Ms Wollscheid.
