The School Psychology

School psychology is the psychological expert service and supports pupils, their parents, teachers, school management members, inspectors, administration staff and legislative bodies. School psychologists are experts for the behaviour, experience, thinking and learning of human beings.

School psychological measures...

  • serve primarily to clarify a problem (diagnosis),
  • support the coexistence and cooperation of everyone in school (pupils, parents, teachers and educational staff) through psychological and pedagogical knowledge and methods,
  • aim to contribute to personal development and performance as well as to the well-being at school,
  • provide advice and assistance in acute and crisis situations in addition to addressing current and future requirements (prevention),
  • and establish contacts with other professionals (i.e. doctors, therapists).

School psychologists are reliable partners to those seeking advice due to the secrecy obligation.

Scope of Duties

Providing advice and assistance to pupils and parents regarding:

  • difficult school career decisions,
  • questions about talents/intellectual giftedness,
  • learning and performance issues,
  • emotional/social problems,
  • special educational needs,
  • individual talents,
  • dyslexia/dyscalculia,
  • developing individual education plans,
  • concentration and motivation problems,
  • school fear, exam nerves and social anxiety,
  • behavioural problems,
  • school avoidance behaviour,
  • eating disorders,
  • communication and tolerance ,
  • bullying/stalking,
  • crisis intervention,
  • violence and sexual violence,
  • and educational issues.

Support given through group/training sessions for children, adolescents and young adults (i.e. concentration, social skills, bullying, relaxation, self-presentation, etc.).

If a situation becomes precarious, concrete and immediate intervention by school psychological (individual) support for pupils can help to:

  •  cope better with "difficult emotions",
  • deal with conflicts with peers, friends, classmates, parents or teachers,
  • develop learning techniques,
  • discover one's own strengths,
  • build up self-confidence,6. strengthen social skills,
  • strengthen family ties,
  • solve emotional, psychosomatic and behavioural problems in order to master difficulties in the school setting and to develop a future perspective.

Advice and support to teachers and pre-school teachers through:

  • individual counselling,
  • supervision and coaching,
  • further training,
  • measures to preserve mental health,
  • promotion of social interaction in classrooms and the school climate through preventive measures (i.e. workshops),
  • intervention when bullying occurs
  • taking measures regarding learning, developmental and behavioural problems of pupils,
  • taking support measures and devising plans (in collaboration with the Coordinator for Educational Support),· mediation,
  • crisis counselling and crisis intervention.

Advise and assist the school management in the areas of:

  • psychosocial issues,
  • risk assessments,
  • school career decisions,
  • Individual Education Plans,
  • school development in the field of consultation and support.

Cooperation

  • school administration and teachers (Kindergarten, Primary School, Secondary School),

Externally with:

  • school advice centres,
  • educational advice centres,
  • youth welfare offices and social services,
  • practising psychologists and doctors,
  • and clinics.
