This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Music Seminar at the European School Munich, which is being led by Katerina Stegemann. Over the past ten years, students have had the chance to discover and develop their musical talents with the help of highly qualified teachers.
There's a team of around fifty music teachers on hand to help the children and young people. The team includes teachers from the European School, lecturers from the Munich University of Music and Theatre, and experienced members of renowned orchestras such as the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Symphony Orchestra. This versatile team offers lessons in a wide range of instruments and vocal styles, including classical singing, jazz, rock and pop. Whether string, keyboard, plucked, woodwind or brass instruments, percussion or electronic music - the lessons are as varied as the interests of the students themselves.
Lessons are held weekly, and students can also benefit from free lessons to further develop their musical skills right at the school. They don't just learn the basics of their instrument or singing, but also how to interpret classical, pop, rock and jazz pieces. There's also a focus on key areas like notation, harmony and music theory. Students can also choose to learn song accompaniment, composition and improvisation.
What's more, the music seminar offers lots of chances to play in chamber music and instrumental groups, the school band, the orchestra or the big band. There are regular concerts where students can show off their skills on stage.
Since the music seminar was founded, the students have celebrated many successes: they have won prizes in competitions such as ‘Jugend musiziert’ and the ‘Tamino Talent Competition for Composing Children’ and successfully passed the examinations at the London Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). The music seminar is all about getting students excited about making music, while also preparing them for the Abitur or music studies.
