Back To The Future

Space travel, journey through time, parallel universes, apocalypses and aliens, the blending of science and fantasy that's what science fiction is about. The Greek language section of the Primary School, supervised by Dr. Dimitrios Goulis, took part in a full-day film workshop on science fiction on the 24th January 2017.

The first and second years watched the film "The Red Balloon" ("Le ballon rouge", France 1957) by Albert Lamorisse. Afterwards the various characters, the music, the magic moments and the theme "friendship" were covered in different activities.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th years analysed Jack Arnold's film "The Incredible Shrinking Man" (USA, 1957). Special effects, the blurring boundary between reality and fiction, creating emotions such as fear in cinema versus in real life, the role of music and sounds, the camera settings and the exposure were the main points of the discussion that followed.

The little filmmakers were active in the design of media material. The first two years used photography to make people and objects disappear. The older pupils were shooting short films with special effects and edited the material with a special software.

Star Wars, Blade Runner, Matrix... Sci-fi films are very popular among a younger audience. They stimulate the imagination, tell great adventures and search for answers as to the meaning of life.

A workshop on a fascinating theme with a strong reference to popular culture!
