An important project of our Secondary School is the participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award International Programme.

The Duke of Edinburugh's Award supports young people aged 14 and over to develop their potential, discover passions and equip themselves with the key skills of the 21st century. The programme's guiding theme is "You can do more than you think!"

The International Programme is very popular with our students, so the event on 13 January, which lasted a good two hours, was also a great success with about 50 visitors. The chair of the project, Peter Lucas, first presented a short summary of the last year, then together with our teacher Jeroen Gerritsen he awarded the certificates to the silver and bronze graduates of the programme. The students, together with our teacher Anna Maria Böckem, planned the whole event with great enthusiasm and organised a wonderful buffet at the end. Many thanks for this!

In Germany, several organisations that were already working with the programme under the direct supervision of the International Secretariat founded the supporting association "Das Internationale Jugendprogramm in Deutschland e.V." in 1994/1995. In 1996, this association was recognised by the Ministry of Education and Sports of Baden- Württemberg as an independent youth welfare organisation and by the International Association of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award as the German "Programme Organiser".

The International Youth Programme is an official school event and creates the framework for a programme of extracurricular activities organised by teachers and parents of the European School Munich (ESM). The Youth Programme is known as the Duke of Edinburgh Award in the UK and the Merite de Jeunesse in France. Young people from all countries of the world take part. It consists of four components: Fitness, Talent, Service and Expeditions. There are four levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, which represent increasing levels of commitment and competence. The Youth Programme encourages students to develop existing interests and discover new ones.

It encourages participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities. The fitness, talent and service areas are organised and run independently by individual students or by small groups with the appropriate support of helpers. Expeditions are organised by groups of trained parents and specialists.

Bronze participants' activities include a Johanniter first aid course, training weekends in the Allgäu, a preparatory expedition in the vicinity of the Staffelsee lake and a final expedition to the Allgäu. The training courses for Silver usually take place in Scotland and the Bavarian Forest. For the golds, it's off to Norway. Pupils start with bronze in grade 4 and can continue with silver from grade 5. In the 6th and 7th grades and after graduation, it is possible to achieve the more demanding Gold level. Bronze is a necessary prerequisite for Silver and Silver is required to progress to Gold level.
