When the children and their teachers come to school in dirndls and lederhosen, it is Oktoberfest time. Last Friday, the primary school of the European School Munich celebrated “Wiesn” as the locals call the Oktoberfest.
Just as the world-famous festival on the Theresienwiese, the festively decorated school had breakfast with pretzels and Bavarian veal sausage, as well as dancing and brass music. But it was not only fun, the school children also got to know the Bavarian culture. They learned that the first Oktoberfest took place in the year 1810 and was celebrated on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig. The children calculated how much the roller coaster ride would cost, searched for Oktoberfest words and got to know Eric Carle's book "Walter the Baker", which tells the story of the invention of pretzels. They made finger puppets with traditional costumes and gingerbread hearts made of clay paper. Thus the children have a beautiful memory of a day in which learning, culture and celebration were combined.
